Elon Musk Vies for Bid on O’Hare High-Speed Rail
An Elon Musk team and a partnership including Meridiam and JLC Infrastructure will vie for the assignment of designing, building and operating high-speed rail from Downtown Chicago to O’Hare International Airport with no public funding. The two teams, chosen from a field of four, will have until May 18 to make their cases under an RFP the Chicago Infrastructure Trust will issue on Friday.
“Strengthening connections between Chicago’s economic engines will drive our economy into the future, build on the city’s legacy of innovation and pay dividends for generations to come,” Mayor Emanuel said Wednesday. “Today, we have two teams that have the ability to get the job done and create an express connection between downtown Chicago and O’Hare Airport without a taxpayer subsidy.”
The high-speed rail project aims to cut travel time between Downtown and O’Hare to 20 minutes or less, cutting more than 50 percent off current travel times. Travel corridors may be above or below ground.
