Ector County Jail Bid Comes in $6M Lower Than Estimate

The bid for the Ector County Sheriff’s Office jail expansion project has been awarded to Cooper Construction for $18.9 million. The Ector County jail bid was approximately $6 million lower than the original $25 million estimate. The Ector County Commissioners’ court voted unanimously to give the project to Cooper Construction, which expects to launch construction in January 2018.

The expansion of the jail on U.S. 385 was approved in May 2017, with commissioners issuing $25 million of public debt to pay for the project. The project, which will take 20 months to complete, will include the addition of a 60,000-square-foot building to the Ector County Law Enforcement Center. The extra space should help lower spending on housing inmates in other county jails, according to Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis.
