Drama Over O’Hare Airport Expansion Plan
Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the planned $8.5 billion deal that would fund the O’Hare Airport Expansion would move forward despite American Airlines’ opposition to the new lease agreement.
American and United Airlines both operate major hubs at O’Hare. American’s opposing stance is based on claims that the city and United entered into a secret agreement to allow United to use five additional gates during the construction process.
The expansion would include a new Global Terminal at the site of the current Terminal 2, as well as new concourses on the western side of the airport.
“The way the agreements have been cast over the years, it was seen more as an airport two major airlines controlled, and we did not,” Emanuel said. “This agreement breaks out of that, and allows us to be in control of our own destiny.”
Many believe the full expansion can’t take place without American’s buy-in.
