Dr. Dre, Jimmy Iovine Break Ground on New USC Academy

USC Iovine Young Academy founders Andre “Dr. Dre” Young and Jimmy Iovine donned hard hats and shoveled fresh soil to kick off construction on the academy’s first building: Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Hall. The music business legends donated $70 million in 2013 to create the academy.

USC President C. L. Max Nikias says, “It will stoke the fire of students’ imaginations, and it will propel the next generations of inventions and products that will transform our lives.”

The academy’s cohesive curriculum spans multiple disciplines, including a combination of culture, tech or business. Slated to open in 2019, the building will become the new hub for the academy’s students.

Roughly 10,000 square feet of makerspaces include:

    • Fabrication labs for metal, wood, plastics, electronics
    • 3D printing and scanning, and 2D large-format printing
    • Media labs for photo, video and audio capture and editing, and immersive and interactive environments
