Downtown Area Regional Center Plan OKd by City Council

The San Antonio City Council approved the Downtown Area Regional Center Plan, a framework to aid in infrastructure and real estate development over a 6.4-square-mile area. The plan encompasses the area from Interstate 35 to the Missions National Historic Park on the city’s east side, to Alazan Creek on the west side. The plans adoption “will guide the city of San Antonio to continue investing in the downtown area,” District 1 Councilman Roberto Treviño told the council.

A team consisting of developers, neighborhood leaders, tourism executives and transportation officials noted the area’s challenges, ranging from increasing housing costs and shrinking office space, to limited available land for development. The team indicated that five focus areas, including Madison Square Park/River North and the Alamodome/St. Paul Square, as locations likely to see more development in upcoming years.
