Dow Chemical Being Courted, Michigan Incentives Lacking
Dow Chemical Co., headquartered in Midland, MI and in the middle of a merger with DuPont, is being courted by other states with friendly incentive packages. And while the chemical giant has repeatedly indicated its commitment to Midland, some wonder if Michigan’s disinvestment in incentives are harming its economic development efforts.
Doug Rothwell, chairman of the Michigan Economic Development Corp., noted that Michigan has a “limited toolset” to compete with other states’ economic development incentives. Texas and Louisiana, for example, have attractive packages, and large Dow employee bases, as does Indiana.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder, however, has opposed tax incentives for businesses, indicating that governments shouldn’t be in the business of deciding what businesses should receive state support. Snyder is focusing more on building an attractive workforce.
