Dockless Biking Gets 6-Month Trial on South Side
Chicago’s Department of Transportation is launching a dockless-biking pilot program this week on the South Side, enabling users to locate bike rentals through a phone app, rather than finding them at a docking station. The pilot will run through Nov. 1, and be limited to an area bounded by 79th Street to the north and the Chicago Skyway to the East.
The program limits operators to 50 so-called “free-locked” bikes—secured with wheel locks and left parked at a street sign or bike rack—at a time. Streetsblog Chicago reported that San Mateo, CA-based LimeBike confirmed it would be launching Tuesday on the South Side.
Although the Divvy docked bike sharing service is available in Chicago, it’s more prevalent in the city’s affluent neighborhoods. Alderman Matthew O’Shea told the Chicago Tribune that “we’ve been clamoring for some kind of bike sharing for years” in his Far Southwest ward.
