Development Team Breaks Ground at Former Spofford Center
City officials, lawmakers and representatives from Gilbane Development Company, Hudson Companies and MHANY Management Inc. recently broke ground on the Peninsula in the Hunts Point section of the Bronx. The multi-phase project will convert the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center into a mixed-use development including 700 affordable housing units.
Phase one of the project will include 56,000 square feet of light industrial space, in addition to 183 units of deeply affordable housing. An additional 10% of the units will be set aside for formerly homeless individuals. The first residential phase is expected to be completed in 2021.
The groundbreaking begins “the transformation of a former detention center into a vibrant affordable housing campus and wellspring of economic opportunity,” said Louise Carroll, commissioner of the Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
The former Spofford Center was in operation for more than 50 years before it closed in 2011.
