Development Council to RGV: Let’s Unify Bike-Sharing

The Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council board wants to unify bike-sharing programs between cities throughout the region, and focus on introducing a new dockless system, as well. As of now, McAllen uses BCycle, while Harlingen, Edinburg and Brownsville contract with Zagster. The goal is to develop a network of cities that have the same bike-sharing service, complete with a dockless system, according to LRGVDC’s Ron Garza.

Garza told the Edinburg Monitor that, while bike-sharing is typically a recreational activity in the RGV, another goal is to help alleviate transportation gaps. Bicycles could be picked up or dropped off near public bus stops.

The LRGVDC found that BCycle is the most optimal system at use in the region. Zagster’s contracts with the RGV cities end in August 2018.
