Developer Sheldon Solow, Known for Striking Architecture, Dies Age 92
Sheldon Solow, a Brooklyn-born developer best known for the 50-story 9 W. 57th St. in Midtown Manhattan, has died, Bloomberg News reported. The founder of Solow Realty & Development was 92.
Solow Realty’s holdings included more than 2,000 New York apartments. Beginning in the early 2000s, Solow began purchasing lots along the East River near the United Nations building. He took until 2016 to break ground on the first building of a planned complex.
His net worth has been estimated at $3.1 billion by Bloomberg and at $4.4 billion by Forbes. Along with a flair for distinctive architecture, Solow was also known for litigiousness, bringing suit against tenants, property owners and his friend Peter Kalikow.
Solow died Tuesday at Weill Cornell Medical Center after a month-long battle with lymphoma, Bloomberg reported. He is survived by his wife Mia Fonssagrives Solow; sons Stefan and Nikolai; and niece Jennifer Wolf.
