Design-Build Catching On in NYC

The “design-build” way of building may finally be catching on in New York City. New design-build projects include the $4 billion Tappan Zee Bridge and $1.6 billion James Farley Post Office conversion into Moynihan Train Hall.

Even so, very few agencies in New York City use design-build techniques, in which a single entity acts as both the designer and contractor. “Public authorities … never want to lose control of the project or the opportunity they have before them,” said Bryant Farland, senior vice president at Skanska USA Building in an interview with Construction Dive Magazine.

Design-build project schedules were 33% shorter on average, when compared with traditional design-bid-build projects, and were completed at 6% lower costs, according to a Pennsylvania State University study.
