Desalination Plant Proposed for Port of Corpus Christi

A seawater desalination plant is in the planning stages for the Corpus Christi area, according to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The plant, which would be placed in Gregory, TX at the Port of Corpus Christi, would output water treated for industrial use. Once built and operational, the plant would be one of the largest desalination plants in the state, with a planned output of 19.1 million gallons of water per day.

The proposed plant would be different from others in the state as well, in that it would process only seawater for use. The other operations in Texas desalinate brackish water, which is water with more salinity than fresh water, but less than sea water. Desalination is considered a source of water that can stand up to significant drought.
