Demolition Underway on Bayfront Inn

A more than half-century old hotel on Corpus Christi’s North Shoreline Boulevard is the target of a wrecking ball. The 125-room Bayfront Inn, which also operated as the Ramada Inn-Bayfront motel, is being torn down after being damaged by Hurricane Harvey, then shuttered in August 2017. Shoreline investments Inc., the owner, hasn’t disclosed what will take the hotel’s place once demolition is complete in a few months.

The building at 601 N. Shoreline Blvd. officially opened in 1964, though it attracted controversy because of the 224-foot Ramada sign. The Organization for the Preservation of an Unblemished Shoreline, not liking the sign or the variance that approved the height, took the matter to court, in a legal battle that took three years. The decision to keep the sign was upheld, though it came down in 1992 after the hotel’s name was changed to Bayfront Inn.
