Democratic Presidential Contenders Are Light on Specifics for Housing
The Democratic debate field has whittled down to seven top potential ticket leaders that qualified for last week’s Politico/PBS-sponsored debate held at Loyola Marymount University in Playa del Rey, CA.
While a long, thorough and at times fiery debate on issues of substance more geared to differences in policy making, voter engagement and issues relevant to a national electorate, affordable housing’s position as a national topic was seemingly saved for next year in January.
The Los Angeles Times advanced the night with an at-length summary of current housing affordability positions from the top-tier candidate camps, a critical topic for multifamily, mixed use and master plan developers looking to approach the real problems facing average Americans seeking an answer to workforce housing and homelessness.
Joe Biden – Former Vice President Joe Biden has not released any agenda for housing or homelessness but is expected to do so later in the campaign.
Pete Buttigieg – South Bend, IN, Mayor Pete Buttigieg has outlined his housing policy goals, but with scant details.
Amy Klobuchar – Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s campaign says she would spend “hundreds of billions of dollars” on programs to increase access to housing, but it is light on specifics.
Bernie Sanders – Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ housing agenda is the most ambitious and most expensive, with a cost of more than $2 trillion over 10 years.
Tom Steyer – The San Francisco billionaire has not released a detailed housing agenda, but has outlined his approach in public remarks.
Elizabeth Warren – Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren has called for spending $500 billion over 10 years to build or refurbish units that would be affordable to low-income families.
Andrew Yang – New York businessman Andrew Yang has no housing agenda.
