Deal Nears to Build Soccer Stadium in the Bronx
After two years of discussions, the owners of the New York City Football Club (NYCFC) and a development group led by Maddd Equities are reportedly close to a deal with the city to build a soccer stadium in the Bronx. The 25,000-seat stadium, to be located near the Major League Soccer franchise’s current home at Yankee Stadium, would be part of a $1-billion mixed-use development.
That privately-financed development would replace an elevator parts factory, along with under-used parking lots near Yankee Stadium. Anchored by the soccer stadium, it would also include affordable housing units, a new school, a hotel and retail. The Yankees have 20% ownership of NYCFC.
“It’s long past time to make the underutilized parking lots around Yankee Stadium into something more,” said a representative for the New York City Economic Development Corporation. However, the representative added that a deal hasn’t been reached yet.
