De Blasio: “Classic Glass and Steel” Towers Will Be Banned

Mayor Bill de Blasio has spelled out a $14-billion package of investments and legislation known as New York City’s Green New Deal. The program seeks to foster a nearly 30% additional reduction in emissions by 2030.

Arguably, the most widely-reported aspect of the plan centers around its emphasis on reducing emissions from large buildings. Going forward, de Blasio said on MSNBC’s Morning Joe broadcast, “We are going to ban the classic glass and steel skyscrapers, which are incredibly inefficient.

“If someone wants to build one of those things, they can take a whole lot of steps to make it energy efficient, but we’re not going to allow what we’ve seen in the past,” de Blasio continued.

Coupled with a ban on all-glass facades, the Green New Deal also requires green retrofits on all large existing buildings, under legislation enacted last week. There are 50,000 such buildings citywide.
