De Blasio Seeks Limits on NYC Hotel Development
Mayor Bill de Blasio has asked the Department of City Planning to draft a proposal outlining how to implement a city-wide special permit for hotel development, Crain’s New York Business reported. It’s the first step in implementing a policy that could ultimately require developers to submit hotel projects to the city’s lengthy and costly land-use review process.
“The city continues to explore how to implement a citywide hotel permit,” a City Planning spokeswoman told Crain’s. A source at City Planning said the mandate was in a “study” phase.
Land-use attorney Mitchell Korbey at Herrick Feinstein told Crain’s, “If the city is actually contemplating a ban on hotels, it would be a devastating blow to our remarkably resilient tourist economy, to the many service industries that are linked to hotels and to multiple neighborhoods. There is no land-use rationale and absolutely no zoning or public policy justification for this.”
