Daimler Investing $1B in Alabama Plant
Daimler AG plans to invest $1 billion to expand its Alabama manufacturing operations, enabling the German auto maker to produce a fully electric SUV sold under the Mercedes-Benz EQ brand. The decision is expected to boost shipments through Alabama’s Port of Mobile, since more than 70% of the SUVs made at Daimler’s Alabama plant are exported.
Production of an electric SUV at the Tuscaloosa plant is envisioned to commence early next decade, with construction of a nearby facility to assemble battery systems slated to begin in 2018. The expansion is expected to create as many as 600 jobs.
The U.S. expansion is aligned with Daimler’s strategy to capture more of the global electric vehicle market. Combined with recent plant expansions in Alabama by Volvo, Toyota Motor Corp., Mazda Motor Corp. and BMW AG, the move reflects an overall supply chain shift away from the U.S.’s traditional Midwest auto manufacturing zone.
