Cuomo Sets Timeline for NYS Gyms and Fitness Studios to Reopen
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that gyms and fitness centers can reopen in New York State starting August 24. The facilities will need to limit capacity to 33%, and require masks at all times, among other safety protocols.
“New Yorkers must closely adhere to the guidelines and local health departments are required to strictly enforce them to help ensure gyms and fitness centers reopen safely and protect the public health,” Cuomo said.
In New York City, it will be up to the Mayor to determine whether gyms and fitness centers should postpone reopening until Sept. 2, and whether indoor classes should similarly be postponed. Elsewhere in the state, the county’s chief executive, such as the county executive or administrator, will determine whether gym reopening or indoor classes need to be postponed.
Local health departments must inspect gyms prior to reopening, or within two weeks of reopening, Cuomo said.
