Cuomo Orders Shutdown of Non-Essential Construction
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Friday ordered a temporary shutdown of non-essential construction across New York State. Work may proceed on infrastructure and transportation projects—including the LaGuardia Airport overhaul—hospitals or healthcare facilities and affordable housing.
The construction sector previously had been exempt from a statewide “pause” that shut down a variety of workplaces amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The Building and Construction Trades Council and the Real Estate Board of New York previously endorsed the position that construction work was essential, but both organizations said they supported the new requirements.
“We agree that the health and safety of New Yorkers remains the top priority,” said REBNY president James Whelan. “We will continue to work closely with our members, state and city officials, our partners in labor and others to comply with the requirements brought on by this unprecedented crisis.”
