Cuomo Imposes New Restrictions on COVID Hotspots

New York State is ramping up a crackdown on COVID-19 hotspot “clusters,” with new rules that include closures of schools and businesses, bans on mass gatherings and restrictions on restaurants, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

NBC New York reported that Cuomo announced what he called a “Cluster Action Initiative” to combat the virus’ spread. It designates areas with higher infection rates, including those in Brooklyn and Queens, while also restricting activities in surrounding areas.

The rules will go into effect on Thursday. Localities will be required to provide the state with personnel to enforce compliance, Cuomo said.

“There is no one who can say they didn’t see this coming,” Cuomo said Tuesday at a news conference from Albany.

Cuomo emphasized that houses of worship are a significant source of spread for the virus, and that the new rules will apply to them as well.
