CTA to Demolish 14 Buildings for ‘Flyover’
The Chicago Transit Authority will begin bulldozing 14 buildings in the city’s Lakeview neighborhood to make way for an elevated bypass that CTA says will reduce delays on the North Side. The so-called “flyover” is intended to ease the congestion of Red, Brown and Purple Line trains that flow in and out of the Belmont Avenue station by enabling CTA to run more trains.
A subject of controversy as it went through the approvals process, the flyover is part of CTA’s $1.2-billion modernization of the Red-Purple Line. It will also refurbish stations, bridges and track between Lawrence and Bryn Mawr avenues on the Red Line, where rush-hour use has increased by 40% in recent years.
CTA spent $32 million to acquire the properties, and will spend another $9 million to demolish them. Construction on the flyover is expected to begin next year.
