CTA Launches Wi-Fi Pilot Program at Subway Stations
The Chicago Transit Authority has launched a pilot program of free Wi-Fi network service, beginning with its Clark/Lake Blue Line subway station downtown. CTA will expand Wi-Fi coverage to the Washington, Monroe and Jackson Blue Line stations by the end of the month.
“Employers want their employees to be able to work on their way to the office,” Mayor Rahm Emanuel told reporters. “The new office is the subway station.”
The new Wi-Fi service provides riders with free, fast internet service. It’s useful for regular commuters and visitors who want to quickly download media, large files or simply access the Internet without using up data from their monthly wireless service packages, CTA said.
“Free WiFi provides our customers another option for connectivity,” said CTA president Dorval Carter.
Chicago introduced 4G wireless service to the subway system in 2015. The service was funded solely by the nation’s four largest wireless providers.
