CPS Energy to Develop New Community Solar Farm

CPS Energy is looking for proposals to develop San Antonio’s newest community solar farm. The municipally-owned electric and gas utility issued an RFP in early January 2018 for companies interested in constructing a solar farm that will be larger than the one east of the city. That one, consisting of more than 11,200 panels on 10 acres near U.S. 87 and Loop 1604, quickly sold out.

Community solar projects offer renters or homeowners with shaded homes to buy panels in a central location. The current operating one, built by Clean Energy Collective, have a combined generating capacity of 1.2 megawatts. CPS said the newest project’s capacity could be as high as 5 megawatts.

Though a specific site for the new farm wasn’t mentioned, CPS Energy’s Paula Gold-Williams indicated that it would be “in the community, not on the outskirts.”
