Co-working and Childcare Combine in New Space

The Hive, Austin’s first co-working space to offer child care, will open in fall 2017 in the metro’s southwest area. The location at 10415 Old Manchaca Rd. is a 2,063-square-foot ranch house that will be remodeled into lounge areas, a seated section, desk carrels, and a 400-square-foot area dedicated to child care.

The Hive is the brainchild of Shelly Weiser, herself a freelance graphic designer and mother of two toddlers. She said the idea of combining co-work and childcare was borne out of desperation. “If I had a project or a last-minute website catastrophe, there was nowhere to go,” she told Community Impact.

Employees in the child care center will be CPR-certified, and will have background checks. A one-way mirror will provide a shared wall, so parents can check on their children during their stay. Wi-Fi cameras will also broadcast monitors in the main lounge.
