Council Okays Obama Center Project in 47-1 Vote
Chicago’s City Council has approved construction of the Obama Presidential Center at the South Side’s historic Jackson Park. The 47-1 vote marks the end of the city-level review of the project, which still needs to pass muster with federal authorities because the park is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The council vote commits the city to $175 million of infrastructure improvements to accommodate the Obama Center. It’s not yet clear how funding for the project itself, with a cost estimated at $500 million, will be raised.
Following the vote, former President Barack Obama tweeted, “This Center is for the leaders of tomorrow who are ready to step up and build the world as it should be. Michelle and I are grateful to Chicagoans and the Chicago City Council for making it happen.”
