Council Approves Rezoning for Towne Twin Village Homeless Development
The San Antonio City Council approved a zoning change to allow the Housing First Community Coalition to establish Towne Twin Village, a 17-acre campus that will provide housing and support services for older homeless people. Once established, the property at 4710 Dietrich Rd. on the city’s east side, will include RVs, tiny homes and small apartments.
Chris Plauche with the coalition said that the board is focusing on older, chronically homeless people, as this population is typically the most difficult to stabilize. “The idea is to provide dignity for those last years of life,” she said in an October 2019 interview.
Plauche is also the volunteer director of the Catholic Worker House, a homeless assistance organization which will relocate to the Towne Twin Village campus when it is completed. Other nonprofits will partner with the coalition to provide physical and mental health services, employment assistance and food.
