Council Approves Midtown Area Regional Center Plan Ordinance
The San Antonio City Council approved an ordinance to adopt a new plan, the Midtown Area Regional Center Plan. The ordinance outlines a 3.7-mile boot-shaped stretch from Interstate 10 to the University of Incarnate Word, and marks the area as prime for redevelopment and continued investment. The plan will be part of the city’s comprehensive master plan, with the goal of transforming the look and feel of San Antonio’s Midtown area.
The plan is a recommendation only for developers and land owners, rather than a mandate. It does focus on mixed-use development and density. These, in turn would achieve other potential goals, such as supporting local transit, making neighborhoods more walkable, improving housing choices and stimulating the local economy.
There are currently six mixed-use projects either planned or underway in the area, with most near Pearl Street.
