Construction to Begin on $580M Capitol Complex, Phase I
A commemorative groundbreaking is scheduled for late September 2017, on the initial phase of the new Capitol Complex in Austin. Specifically, the $580 million first phase will create two new state office buildings and three blocks of a “Texas Mall” promenade, which are scheduled to be completed by late fall 2021.
The Capitol Complex initial phase, which will total one million square feet, will be situated north of the Texas State Capitol, between 15th Street and Martin Luther King Boulevard. The project’s aim is employee consolidation into state-owned buildings. It’s estimated that the development will eventually save Texas taxpayers $22.6 million a year that is currently being paid to lease more than 1.1 million square feet of private office space in the Austin area.
A second phase would feature two more buildings and completion of the four-block mall. Phase two hasn’t yet been funded by the Texas Legislature.
