Construction on the Wall Could Begin Sooner Than You Think

While most news coming from the White House has been turned toward healthcare reform, the border wall hasn’t gone away. Construction could start as soon as November 2017 on three miles of border barrier in South Texas – smack through the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge in Hidalgo County.

For the past six months, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CPB) has been quietly preparing a site for the wall. The news came from a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service official, who passed the news to Friends of the Wildlife Corridor, which raises funds to support two national wildlife refuges in South Texas.

The 2,088-acre Santa Ana refuge is on the Rio Grande, south of McAllen, TX, and is considered one of the nation’s top bird-watching sites. It is also home to two endangered wildcats, and some of the last surviving strands of sabal palm trees in South Texas.
