Construction Launches on San Felipe Museum

Groundbreaking has commenced on a 10,000-square-foot museum and visitor’s center at the San Felipe de Austin State Historic site. The $12.5 million development will commemorate San Felipe, an early Stephen F. Austin colony, which was destroyed by its residents in the mid-19th century as they fled the advancing Mexican army during the Texas Revolution.

The museum is expected to deliver in spring 2018, and is part of an overall attempt to restore and resurrect San Felipe, located due west of Houston. The facility’s exhibits will include a map plaza showing the town as it appeared in 1836, as well as an overview of the residents’ lives at the time. To date, $7.2 million of the $12.5 million has been raised, with hopes that an additional $5.3 million will be raised through public and private donations.
