Connect Austin: Rising Stars Share Advice, Tips, Experience

Austin, TX is known as a “young” city, because of its tech focus. As such, it made sense to present the “Austin’s Rising Stars” panel at the recent Connect Austin conference. Moderated by Zach Jamail with Peloton Commercial Real Estate, the session acquainted attendees with Austin’s younger CRE members, who shared their philosophies and advice.

When it came to mentors and influencers, Alexis Michael with Bank of the Ozarks had plenty of praise for Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) of Austin, which she said is “there to lift each other up and help each other out.” Meanwhile, CBRE’s Ace Schlameus tapped Kent Lance at HPI as his mentor, noting, “I learned so much from him just paying attention.”

Paying attention, Schlameus continued, is a good piece of advice for young brokers. “If you just listen,” he said, “It’s amazing how much you will pick up.” Meanwhile, Ryan Bohls with NGKF suggested working for someone who believes in you, then work hard for that person, while Michael advised building a network early on.

When it came to discussing how things have changed for the next generation of brokers, Schlameus pointed out that reporting demands have changed, thanks to technology. Bohls, however, noted that few things have changed, even with the technology and advancements. “All the technology in the world is not going to change the core fundamentals that make people successful,” he said.
