Congress Passes Stopgap Funding, Averts Government Shutdown
Congress narrowly passed a temporary spending bill leading into the Christmas holiday, on a 231-188 House vote, and later clearing the Senate, 66-32. President Donald Trump is expected to sign the measure.
The bill provides just enough money to keep agencies operating through Jan. 19. The government would have shut down at midnight Friday if the stopgap legislation hadn’t been approved.
Not included in the measure was $81 billion in disaster aid, which passed the House, but stalled in the Senate. As were budget limits imposing a freeze on the Pentagon and domestic agencies, a long-term extension of the popular Children’s Health Insurance Program for low-income kids, and Senate legislation aimed at stabilizing health insurance markets.
