Coney Island’s Boardwalk Achieves Landmark Status
On the 95th anniversary of its opening, the Coney Island Boardwalk was officially designated a New York City scenic landmark. The beachfront promenade, also known as the Riegelmann Boardwalk, joins several landmarked properties nearby, including Childs Restaurant and the Cyclone rollercoaster.
Meenakshi Srinivasan, chair of the Landmarks Preservation Commission, called the boardwalk “as much a part of the culture as it is a part of the history of New York City.” Now spanning 2.7 miles between Coney Island and Brighton Beach, the boardwalk was built in three phases between 1923 and 1941, its construction spearheaded by then-Brooklyn Borough President Edward J. Riegelmann.
The current borough president, Eric Adams, called the long-awaited landmarking “a landmark achievement for the communities of Coney Island and Brighton Beach, from the leadership of Council Members Deutsch and Treyger, to the tenacity of longtime residents who made their voices count.”
