City’s Smart Lighting Program Reaches 100k Milestone

The city’s smart lighting program, which thus far has concentrated on the South and West Sides, has reached a milestone. The program has replaced 100,000 high-pressure sodium streetlights with LED fixtures, marking it about 37% complete.

“By converting our streetlights to LED technology, we are modernizing Chicago’s infrastructure, creating new jobs and saving taxpayers more than $100 million over the next decade,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The modernization project will ultimately replace 270,000 street, alley and viaduct lights citywide. It’s being implemented by the Chicago Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Chicago Infrastructure Trust and the Department of Innovation and Technology.

Chicago is also installing a citywide lighting management system for the new LED lights. “Once the new smart lighting system is operational, we will also be notified when lights go out—and this will eliminate the need for residents to call 311 to report outages,” said Emanuel.
