City’s “Building on Burnham” Plan Opens Its 36th Field
Continuing the Emanuel administration’s “Building on Burnham” program to expand Chicago’s park and recreational options, Ogden Park in Englewood now has an all-weather, eight-lane track and athletic turf field. It’s the 36th field constructed in neighborhood parks under the Building On Burnham plan.
The new facility, which will support football, soccer and track, will increase the competitive and recreational athletic opportunities in the park and across the Englewood community, according to an announcement from the city. It features sports lighting to extend visibility and play time.
“This track and field will add to the opportunities our Englewood residents have to lead healthy, active lives,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Ogden Park was originally designed by architect Daniel Burnham, as one of 10 parks constructed to provide relief in Chicago’s overcrowded tenement districts. Totaling more than 60 acres, it features a gymnasium, fitness center, boxing gym, dance studio and multi-purpose room.
