City, State Can Partner with Amazon, Says RPA

In exchange for what the Regional Plan Association calls “a very good deal” for both Amazon and the city and state, RPA proposes that the e-commerce giant’s campus in Long Island City become a vehicle to further some of the region’s long-term goals.

“The best way to make sure this deal is a win for all is for the city and state to continue to invest in infrastructure and get Amazon to help make it happen,” according to a newly-issued RPA report.

On the subject of infrastructure, for example, RPA urges the city and state to enact congestion pricing, add new bus routes and build a new commuter rail station at Sunnyside Yard. For its part, “Amazon should champion getting the Gateway Program built and extended into Sunnyside and beyond.”

RPA also calls on the city and state to accelerate production of affordable housing in and around LIC.
