City, Amtrak Working Toward Master Plan for Sunnyside Yard

The city and Amtrak have signed a letter of intent to collaborate on the master planning process for development around Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard in western Queens, which could bring up to 24,000 apartments to the area. To coordinate the city’s involvement in the planning process, the New York City Economic Development Corporation appointed Cali Williams to a newly-created post.

New York-based Practice for Architecture and Urbanism has been tapped as lead consultant to develop the Sunnyside Yard master plan. The planning team also includes engineering, futurist, technical and community engagement organizations such as HNTB, Nelson Byrd Woltz and Thornton Tomasetti.

“Sunnyside Yard represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to bring good jobs, affordable homes, open space and improved public transit to Western Queens,” said NYCEDC president and CEO James Patchett. “We look forward to working closely with Amtrak, the Sunnyside Yard Steering Committee and community leaders to deliver this transformational investment.”
