City Finalizes Design Deal for $8.5B O’Hare Expansion

The City of Chicago has awarded a lead architect contract to Studio ORD, the Jeanne Gang-led joint venture that will drive the design of O’Hare 21, the $8.5-billion expansion of O’Hare International Airport. Studio ORD will begin working with the Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA), airline partners and other key stakeholders on the design concept for the new O’Hare Global Terminal and Global Concourse.

“This experienced, world renowned team will help the City and our airline partners create economic opportunity for our communities, while furthering momentum behind Chicago as a global leader in air travel,” said Aviation Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee. “O’Hare 21 isn’t just a catalyst for transformation in aviation—it’s a catalyst for growth for Chicago’s 77 communities and the entire Chicagoland area.”

CDA said the expansion will deliver 25% more gate space and enable O’Hare’s future growth. The expansion will be paid for by airport revenues.
