City Council to Vote on Convention/Hotel Corporation

The Abilene City Council will vote to create an Abilene Convention Center Hotel Development Corp., which would be the next step in focusing on a long-discussed hotel/convention center project in the city’s CBD. The council will vote on formation of the corporation at the upcoming March 28 meeting.

If the corporation is created, it will own the hotel portion of the downtown hotel and convention center facility, and would handle the hotel’s development and financing. Abilene City Manager Robert Hanna told the Abilene Reporter News that ownership of the existing convention center wouldn’t change, and the hotel would be managed by an experienced third-party operator.

If successful, the proposed hotel project would be funded through a mix of $40 million in private investment, a $7 million local private sector donation, remaining TIF funds and tax dollars.
