City Council Poised to Enact Sweeping Package of Green Buildings Laws

New York City, and in particular commercial property owners, could soon see the world’s most comprehensive municipal emissions reductions bill to date. The City Council is set to vote this Thursday on the Climate Mobilization Act, which, among other provisions, would require green retrofits of all commercial buildings 25,000 square feet or larger.

The bill, one of a package of measures the Council will consider on Thursday, would establish the Office of Building Energy and Emissions Performance, as well as establish a timeline for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for existing buildings.

Other bills would require the city to complete a study on the feasibility of shutting down all 24 gas and oil-burning power plants within city limits, and replacing them with renewables and batteries; establish a renewable energy loan program; require green roofs on certain buildings; and revise the building code to facilitate installation of wind turbines.
