City Council Approves Alamo Plaza Plan
The San Antonio City Council voted 9-2 to approve an historic overhaul of the Alamo Plaza. The multimillion-dollar renovation plan includes a single-entry point to a portion of the public plaza. However, the plan’s controversy has centered around fencing off the plaza, and relocation of the Alamo Cenotaph, known as “The Spirit of Sacrifice.”
Several protests have taken place against relocating the monument approximately 500 feet south of its current location. Furthermore, local urban designers have spoken out against fencing off the historic plaza in front of the mission building.
The council voted to close adjacent streets to pursue contracts for the Cenotaph’s repair and relocation, and to approve a 50-year lease and management agreement with the Texas General Land Office. Officials hope to complete the redevelopment by 2024, 300 years after the Alamo was established.
