Citicorp Center Landmarked

The iconic skyscraper formerly known as the Citicorp Center is officially a historic New York City landmark.

The complex at 601 Lexington Avenue is a major example of late 20th century modern architecture, according to the City’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, which voted in December. Built from 1973 to 1978, and designed by Hugh A. Stubbins & Associates, in association with Emery Roth & Sons, the roof of the 49-story office tower is cut off at a 45-degree angle.

“The Citicorp Tower’s distinctive features make it one of the most recognizable skyscrapers in New York City,” said Commission Chair Meenakshi Srinivasan.

The designation is the culmination of a dozen recent landmark designations in Greater East Midtown, all in preparation for a larger effort to rezone the district now underway.
