Chicagoans Like Mayor’s Development Pushes, But Not the Mayor Himself
Chicagoans surveyed by Washington, DC pollster Jill Normington are overwhelmingly in favor of a couple of major development pushes by Mayor Emanuel: constructing a bullet-train line to O’Hare Airport, and offering Amazon tax breaks and other incentives to build its second headquarters in the city. They’re less enthusiastic about the mayor himself.
Seventy-three percent of respondents surveyed for the March 2018 Temkin/Harris Poll are strongly or somewhat in favor of a bullet train, while 59% endorse incentives to lure Amazon. However, compared to six months earlier, Emanuel’s disapproval rating rose 300 basis points to 36%, while 57% of those surveyed said they’d vote for his opponent.
Conversely, Chicagoans’ view of their city’s outlook has improved somewhat from September 2017. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said the city is on the wrong track, compared to 66% who said the same thing six months earlier.
