Chicago’s CBD is Poised for Greater Density
Chicago lands at about the midpoint in CommercialCafe’s ranking of the top 25 cities for infill potential. With 16.8 acres in the CBD, it ranks slightly ahead of Manhattan and surpasses Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, and Washington, DC in terms of available land.
With just under seven million square feet of urban core construction completed since 2013, Chicago is one of the top three U.S. cities in terms of development activity, lagging behind only Dallas and New York City. Currently underway are 2,130 residential units and 4.6 million square feet of office.
When an additional 3.4 million square feet of office and 282 apartment units still awaiting city approvals are factored in, it’s safe to say that Chicago’s CBD is bound to experience a spike both in construction activity and density in the coming years, according to CommercialCafe.
