The Dallas City Council agreed to give AT&T the infrastructure it wants around the telecom giant’s headquarters at Akard and Commerce Streets in downtown Dallas. AT&T announced in October 2016 that it would invest $100 million on upgrades to its downtown campus. The infrastructure reconfiguration is necessary for its “Discovery District,” a mixed-use project offering retail, restaurants and other amenities.
The reconfigurations will include:
- Reduction of four eastbound lanes on Commerce Street to three from Houston Street to Cesar Chavez Boulevard
- Closing of Akard Street between Jackson and Wood Streets
- Converting Akard from a three-lane, one-way street into a two-lane, two-way between Wood and Young Streets
- Converting Wood from a three-lane, one-way street to a two-lane, two-way street from Griffin Street to Pearl Expressway
The year-long discussions concerning the street re-do involved AT&T, City Hall, Downtown Dallas Inc., Dallas Area Rapid Transit and downtown businesses, residents and property owners.
