Cary, NC Development Faces Historic Obstacle

Northwoods Associates LLC is interested in joining forces with the town of Cary, NC to build a 55,000-75,000-square-foot retail and office building at West Chatham Street and Harrison Avenue. The downtown project, in the works for about a decade, will cost approximately $51 million.

One continuing obstacle is that the project would require moving the Ivey-Ellington House to another location up the road. The Ivey-Ellington House, at 135 W. Chatham St., dates back to the late 19th century.

The structure is on the National Register of Historic Places, and concerns were aired at a recent council meeting that moving the house could impact its historic significance. Nor were all council members in favor of where the house could end up, facing a new access road.
