California Relaxes Social Gathering Rules Ahead of Holidays

California eased COVID-19 restrictions to allow outdoor social gatherings of up to three households. California Department of Public Health previously limited gatherings to those from a single household. People must still wear masks and follow other safety precautions designed to help keep the virus from spreading.

The new guidelines come ahead of a time of year when people typically get together for festivities such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. The state says the easing of restrictions isn’t aimed at encouraging larger gatherings though.

California Governor Gavin Newsom says, “I want to remind people, [the updated] guidance doesn’t mean go. We want to caution against that. We are entering into the holidays but also we’re entering into a part of year where things cool down. People are more likely to congregate back indoors in settings that put their physical proximity and likelihood of transmitting the disease at higher risk.”

State officials indicate smaller gatherings are still better and noted there is no limit to the number of people who can be a part of the three household gatherings.

California has 850,028 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date. There were 3,449 newly recorded confirmed cases Sunday, the most recent reporting period. The state’s seven- and 14-day positivity rates are 2.6%.
