California Legislature Seeks Extension on Tenant Evictions

California courts are bracing for eviction cases to double in the coming year as renters’ COVID financial woes widen. That figure may top 240,000 new eviction cases, according to some estimates. The projection takes into account the impending expiration of state eviction protections which end in late January.

As COVID continues to wreak havoc for multifamily tenants throughout the state, the legislature and governor are working on an extension of the 2020 state law that provided tenant eviction protections (AB 3088-Chiu). The legislature will inevitably pass an extension.

While Gov. Gavin Newsom hopes to extend these renter safety measures, he’s also asked the legislature to increase the judicial system’s funding so courts can prepare for this eviction surge. Many tenants have been able to remain in their homes thus far with the assistance of renter protection laws passed last year.
