California Leads Nation in Union Membership
Union membership grew in California last year, while across the country union rolls shrunk. The latest numbers from the Bureau of Labor Statistics show California led the nation with 2.55 million members last year.
The next largest union membership state was New York, with 1.9 million members, followed by Illinois at 821,000 members.
California experienced union growth primarily as a result of overall job market gains in 2016, which was up 65,000, or roughly 2.6%, over the previous year. Union membership now accounts for 15.9% percent of the state’s workforce. By comparison, the last peak was in 2006 when union membership equated to 15.7% of the workforce
Nationally, union membership dipped 1.6% in 2016, losing 237,000 members. Last year, union rolls stood at 14.6 million members.
